School Programs

Young Players Theater offers a full range of theater and movement classes for schools. We have programs for children from nursery age through high school. We can provide In-School Residencies as well as school-based After-School Programs. Our classes can be tailored to match the needs of the schools we are working with. Young Players Theater currently provides arts-in-education programming at PS 107 in Park Slope, PS 9 in Prospect Heights, PS 58 in Carroll Gardens, Community Roots Charter School in Fort Greene, and Brooklyn Free Space Nursery School in Park Slope.
Young Players Theater offers in-school residencies, after-school programs, and family workshops.

FALL 2009 CLASSES

Early Childhood Program
Nursery through Kindergarten

Storybook Theater
Stories come alive when we use our bodies, voices, and imaginations! While learning the fundamentals of theater through games, music and movement, we ignite the imagination while encouraging social, physical and cognitive development.

Magical Musical
Children will be introduced to the magical world of musical theater
through music, movement, and storytelling. Over the course of
the program children will explore a theme and create a story based on this theme. Children will learn songs and movement sequences.

Elementary Program
1st through 5th Grade

Acting Out
Learn basic acting skills while re-creating fairytales and folktales. Through playful theater games and activities children will learn basic theater terminology explore character development and problem solving. The ensemble-based approach fosters trust, respect, and confidence building.

Hip Hop Theater Project
Young people are often drawn to hip hop music and culture. What is hip -hop and how did it begin? What is hip -hop theater? These are just a few of the questions that will be investigated in this workshop. We will be focusing on the positive messages of hip- hop and how it has and continues to empower young people. Through music, dance, and the spoken word participants will construct their own piece of hip-hop theater as an ensemble.

Broadway Bound
Sing, dance, and act in this fun-filled musical theater workshop. Learn vocal and physical warm-ups to prepare for rehearsals and performances. Children will be introduced to theater terminology through theater games and exercises. They will learn songs from their favorite musicals and learn basic choreography. Every child shines in our unique and playful program.

ACT in Spanish/ACT in French
Language learning is an active process. Learning language through theater engages the mind, body, and emotional life of the child. This is a playful workshop that introduces the target language in a fun and playful way. All levels are welcome including fluent speakers. The class Is conducted in both English and the target language. Children will play theater games and exercises and will explore character and story. They will work on text compatible with their level of experience.

In-School Residencies

In-School Residencies are programs that take place during school hours. The teaching artist will work closely with classroom teachers. A theme chosen by teacher and artist will be explored throughout the residency. All residencies culminate in an informal performance.

After-School Programs

After school programs can be mixed grades. The artist will select a theme to focus on throughout the workshop. The program will culminate in an informal performance.

Family Workshops

Parents and children are given the space and time to “act out” and have fun together. Families spend a few hours making theater together. They learn techniques that can be used at home to diffuse tension and make the mood more PLAYful and productive.
